India-Iran preferential trade talks likely in May

first_imgNew Delhi: Senior officials of India and Iran are likely to hold fifth round of negotiations for a bilateral preferential trade agreement (PTA) here this month, an official said. Till now, four rounds of negotiations have been completed and the last one was held in March in Tehran where both countries discussed draft text of the pact.”Both sides have tentatively agreed to hold the fifth round of talks here this month,” the official added. Unlike in a free trade pact, where two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate duties on maximum number of goods traded between them, PTA involves removal of duties on certain identified products. Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) Chairman Mohit Singla said the PTA is important as India will be able to diversify its export basket which is now limited to agri products. “With a carefully designed PTA, strategic products such as leather, textiles and ready made garments, which attract very high duties in Iran can become naturally competitive and India will be able to leverage its export strengths,” he said. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysFederation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said Iran holds huge export opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, chemicals, machinery, pharmaceuticals, paper and paper products, man-made fibre and filament yarn and essential oils. “The PTA will help India in its long run to increase exports,” FIEO DG Ajay Sahai said. Iran’s major exports to India are oil, fertilisers and chemicals while imports include cereals, tea, coffee, spices and organic chemicals. India’s exports to the Persian Gulf nation in 2017-18 were worth $2.65 billion, while imports were valued at $11.11 billion.last_img read more

On margins of Palestinian session Annan holds wideranging talks on world crises

On the margins of the London Conference in Support of the Palestinian Authority, convened by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Mr. Annan met with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier and Arab League Secretary-General Amre Moussa. In all three meetings, he discussed developments in Iraq as well as in Syria and Lebanon, where last month’s assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has led to renewed calls for the withdrawal of some 14,000 Syrian troops.Security Council resolution 1559 of last September calls for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Lebanon and last month Mr. Annan said he hoped there would be clear signs of a Syrian withdrawal by April. With Mr. Moussa, he also discussed the situation in Sudan where the UN is preparing to launch a large peace-building operation following an accord between the Government and rebels in the south that ended Africa’s longest-running civil war and could lead to the return home of 4.5 million refugees and internally displaced persons. The UN is also seeking to end conflict in Sudan’s western Darfur region where fighting between rebels, the Government and paramilitary forces has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, the displacement of nearly 2 million others and what a UN-appointed inquiry commission calls massive war crimes and crimes against humanity. With Mr. Barnier the Secretary-General also discussed Côte d’Ivoire, where the UN has another mission that is seeking to cement peace between the Government and rebels. After meeting with Ms. Rice, he told reporters he had also discussed UN reform as well as Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), both of whom have nuclear programmes that have raised concerns with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA).Nepal, where Mr. Annan recently called for the full restoration of democracy after King Gyanendra dissolved parliament and declared a state of emergency, also figured on the agenda. He later met with Mr. Blair for similar worldwide discussions and was scheduled to have talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the evening. read more

SecretaryGeneral recommits to UNbacked meeting on nuclearfree Middle East in December

Mr. Ban yesterday met with the Finnish Under-Secretary of State, Jaako Laajava, the Conference Facilitator, who briefed him on the preparations and prospects for convening the meeting after his talks this week in Cairo with senior representatives from the UN, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the League of Arab States.“The Secretary-General reaffirms his strong support for Mr. Laajava and welcomes his intensive efforts,” a statement issued by Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said. “He underlined the importance of the Conference, which is a unique opportunity for all States of the region to collectively enhance their security. He urges all States of the region to participate in and contribute to a successful Conference.”The May 2010 review meeting of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) – which takes place every five years – called for a UN-sponsored conference in 2012 to establish a nuclear-free Middle East to be attended by all States in the region.Ahead of the 2010 meeting, Mr. Ban had called for the number of nuclear-weapon-free zones to multiply and ultimately span the globe. “My goal – our goal – is to make the whole world a nuclear-weapon-free zone,” he stated, calling such zones the “success stories of the disarmament movement.”Currently, there are five such zones: Latin America and the Caribbean; the South Pacific; South-East Asia; Central Asia; and Africa. read more

Why swearing really is good for you

first_imgThe study followed up earlier work that showed how cursing increases pain tolerance, helping explain the common reaction to hitting one’s thumb with a hammer.Dr Richard Stephens, from the University of Keele, in Staffordshire, who led both teams, said: “We know from our earlier research that swearing makes people more able to tolerate pain.”A possible reason for this is that it stimulates the body’s sympathetic nervous system – that’s the system that makes your heart pound when you are in danger.”If that is the reason, we would expect swearing to make people stronger too, and that is just what we found in these experiments.” Surprisingly, increases in heart rate and other expected changes linked to the “fight or flight” response were not seen in the latest tests.Dr Stephens added: “Quite why it is that swearing has these effects on strength and pain tolerance remains to be discovered. We have yet to understand the power of swearing fully.”The findings were presented at the British Psychological Society’s annual meeting taking place in Brighton. In the first experiment, 29 volunteers with an average age of 21 pedalled hard on an exercise bike for half a minute while repeating a swear word or a neutral word.Peak power was increased by an average 24 watts by swearing, the scientists found. The second experiment involved 52 participants of about the same age undergoing tests of hand grip strength.Again, the volunteers were asked to swear or utter a less emotionally charged neutral word while measurements were taken.Swearing boosted grip strength by 2.1 kilograms on average. We have yet to understand the power of swearing fully.Dr Richard Stephens University of Keele Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Patient waits twoandahalf days for ambulance as worst delays revealed

A patient waited more than two-and-a-half days for an ambulance, new figures show. Four of the UK’s ambulance trusts have kept patients waiting for more than 24 hours. The Welsh Ambulance Service recorded the longest delays, taking more than 50 hours to respond to 999 calls on four occasions over the course of a year. One patient waited for 62 hours, the data obtained from a Freedom of Information request showed.Meanwhile, the East of England, South East Coast and South Central ambulance services all recorded longest waits of more than 24 hours between June 2017 and 2018.The trusts said the longest waits were for “less serious calls” and that they had to prioritise people in life-threatening or urgent conditions. The Welsh Ambulance Service said it “fully accepted” that a number of patients waited “far longer than anyone would like”, but said the figures were “not typical”. Stephen Clinton, assistant director of operations for the service, told the BBC: “These figures represent the extreme end of the waiting time spectrum and are neither typical nor do they explain the circumstances of these individual cases.”He said in some cases patients were already in the care of medical teams, while others were affected by extreme weather conditions. The data, obtained by the BBC, also showed that the total number of calls received by ambulance services had risen by 15 per cent between 2015 and 2017. James Bonds latest nemesis to be revealed as beach picture teases new

James Bond’s latest nemesis and love interest will be revealed today as fans were teased with a photograph of a beach that appeared to be the backdrop for an iconic scene involving former ‘Bond girl’ Ursula Andress. The official 007 Twitter account posted a photograph of the beach, believed to be in Jamaica, ahead of the cast announcement.Pictures posted on Instagram and Twitter show a beach shoreline with #Bond25 written in the sand.An obvious choice of location would be Ian Fleming’s Jamaican estate, Goldeneye, where the English author penned many of the 007 novels. The sprawling beachside home sits on the northern coastline on the Caribbean island on Oracabessa bay, and was bought by Bob Marley following Fleming’s death in 1964.A number of the Bond movies, including Dr No, in which Ursula Andress made her breakthrough role as Honey Ryder, and Live And Let Die, were filmed near the estate, which now operates as a hotel. The tweet on Wednesday from the official 007 account said: “Coming up at 13:10 BST/05:10 PDT is the #BOND25 Live Reveal which you can watch here on Twitter.”Do you have a question for the cast? Now’s your chance. Just use £BOND25 in your question.” The 25th Bond film, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, will be Daniel Craig’s fifth outing as 007.It is expected to be Craig’s last time playing the spy, having previously starred in Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre. Urban legend Atari ET game to be dug up on its 30th

first_imgIf you know your video game history, the very mention of the Atari 2600 E.T. game will make your eyes light up as you reach for your tinfoil hat. The game is said to be so historically bad that Atari destroyed millions of copies and stuffed them all into nine trucks that were buried in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Now, 30 years after this supposedly happened, film company Fuel has made a deal with the city commission of Alamogordo to not only dig up the landfill looking for the possibly buried games, but to also film the whole thing as a documentary. The Atari 2600 E.T. isn’t the only game that was supposedly buried so as to be forgotten by the public — the rumor also includes other Atari games, notably the console’s port of Pac-Man.Perhaps the most famous game that’s said to be buried out in the middle of nowhere, though, is one that most likely doesn’t exist: Polybius. This title was supposedly released back in 1981, a year before E.T., and was similar in style to tunnel-shooter Tempest. However, whereas E.T. was just rumored to be so bad it drove people crazy, Polybius was said to have actually drove people crazy — inducing nightmares and even suicidal tendencies. So, the story goes, Polybius was quickly recalled in order to keep the public safe, while E.T. was buried in a landfill to keep Atari from being tormented by poor reviews and to prevent the blockbuster franchise from being tarnished. The agreement with Alamogordo lasts for six months, so Fuel should have more than enough time to go dumpster diving for old video games. If the company actually finds the buried games, that would put this video game urban legend to rest, and most likely make an interesting documentary for those of us that keep a tinfoil hat close to our desks.last_img read more

As of now, the details of the part are not yet revealed to the fans but given Keanu’s stardom, he is most likely to play an important character. As many of our readers know this that The Eternals has been in pipeline from a very long time. After the phenomenal success of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel is eyeing towards making a different type of superhero movies, targeting young audience as well as to those who are reading the comics from a very early age.Apart from fans, even Marvel Studios Kevin Feige is also excited to start working on The Eternals. During his earlier conversation, Feige stated that bringing The Eternals on the big screen would be perfect. Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 2Twitter/ John Wick: Chapter 2″Your reaction about not being familiar with the Eternals is perfect, because most people weren’t familiar with Guardians and believe it or not there were people that were not familiar with Avengers or with Iron Man,” Feige said in his earlier interview. “So for us, its finding great stories whether people have heard of them or not and bring them to the big screen in as amazing ways as we can.”Keanu Reeves is apparently one of the most loved actors of this generation. Folding for peace remembering Hiroshima

first_imgNo related posts. The display pays homage to Sadako Sasaki, who wished to live by making paper cranes and turned them into a world-wide symbol. Sadako was two years old on August 6, 1945, when the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, where she lived. She survived the bomb blast but fell ill to leukemia a few years later. Friends encouraged her to follow an old Japanese legend and fold 1,000 paper cranes and her wish would come true. But after completing 644 cranes, she died. School friends finished the task and the cranes became a symbol of hope and peace. Every year, children and adults from all over fold cranes and send them to the peace memorial dedicated to Sadako and other child victims in Hiroshima. The Center for Peace Education (CEPPA) is a nongovernment organizaton designed to help people find alternatives to violent responses and to foment a culture of peace. CEPPA works with teachers, health workers, prisoners and communities. For information, contact CEPPA at 2234-0524 or visit www.ceppacr.org. Facebook Comments Mitzi Stark Visitors try their hands at paper crane-making at the Children’s Museum in San José.  Making 1,000 origami peace cranes is no small achievement. The trick is to fold and fold and fold a square of paper until a bird-like critter emerges. Millions have mastered the trick, and these paper cranes have become a peace symbol around the world.Aug. 1-3, the Children’s Museum became a hatching ground as children and grownups tried their hands at folding 1,000 origami cranes. The idea came from the Center for Education for Peace (CEPPA), a non-government organizaton that promotes alternatives to violence through workshops, talks and meetings. Folding paper cranes and listening to the story of Sadakp Sasaki, whose goal of making 1,000 paper cranes has inspired peace around the world, was part of a peace weekend which included a twenty kilometer run for peace. August 6 is Hiroshima Day.Volunteers from CEPPA and a group of young people from an origami club demonstrated, folded and taught the process. Andrea Vargas had never folded a crane before, but by midday had accomplished 15 and expected to make another 25 before packing it in. Alfredo Guitierez, a club member who can fold all kinds of forms, had already made 80 cranes. As an origami expert he thought it was easy. Others struggled, but seated around two tables they managed to make a colorful pile of folded cranes, thanks to a generous donation of bond paper by the Jiménez and Tanzi office supply company. The thousand cranes and possibly more will be on display in the museum’s art gallery, and later will be sent to the peace memorial in Hiroshima, courtesy of the cultural office of the Japanese embassy.last_img read more

said the issues which were raised by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh have been already "responded" in the past File image of M Venkaiah Naidu PTI "It is evident that these issues have been referred to a few days before the election to the post of Vice-President of India clearly reflecting on the political motives and the mischievous intentions" Naidu said in a statement giving a point-by-point rebuttal of the allegations It is a "clear evidence of the sense of hopelessness and political bankruptcy" of the Congress party he added On exemption from paying development charges by Swarna Bharat Trust (SBT) run by his daughter Naidu said when this issue was raised by the media the Telangana government in its rejoinder dated 23 July 2017 clarified that SBT was "not the first and the last" to be given such exemption "In fact (it) gave details (of) several other organisations given such exemption including those granted such exemption by the Congress governments in the state" he said Naidu said the Telangana government also said that the trust was given exemption with a view to encourage it in doing social services He was responding to Congress leader Ramesh’s allegation that on 20 June the Telangana government issued a "secret order" exempting the SBT from paying development charges of more than Rs 2 crore to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority On the issue of land grab in Nellore district which Ramesh alleged that Naidu was forced to return later the vice-presidential nominee said the matter was raised by local Congressmen as early as 2002 and even moved the courts the BJP national president I was the ex-officio chairman of this trust and had no role in the allotment of land" "Isn’t it a fact that several trusts were similarly allotted land by various governments including the Congress governments" he asked Ramesh had said that the Supreme Court on 6 April 2011 quashed the allotment of 20 acres of land to KTMT of which Naidu was chairman He said the Supreme Court also passed strictures against the Madhya Pradesh government in allotting this land in Bhopal on 25 September 2004 Dismissing the allegations Naidu said that he was a "product of a activities in the event of the failure of the 2015 accord between Iran and world powers A nuclear plant in Iran PTI In such a scenario Iran could "restart its activities without any limits" Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the IAEA’s board in Vienna The future of the deal—known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—has been thrown into doubt after US president Donald Trump announced last month that the European Union would withdraw from the accord and re-impose sanctions The preparatory works mentioned by Najafi refer to steps to boost uranium enrichment capacity by producing new centrifuges as outlined on Tuesday by Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi who heads the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation Najafi said that in addition Iran had notified the IAEA of a plan to restart activity at its uranium conversion facility in Isfahan to produce the UF6 feedstock for centrifuges The IAEA confirmed on Tuesday that it had "received a letter from Iran on 4 June informing the Agency that there is a tentative schedule to start production of UF6" However Najafi emphasised that the measures do "not mean that right now Iran will start any activities contrary to the JCPOA" The remaining signatories to the pact have been scrambling to find ways to preserve the accord since Trump’s announcement Last month a senior Iranian official said European powers had until the end of May to come up with an economic package to compensate Iran for the effects of the US withdrawal On Wednesday Najafi said that negotiations were still continuing at an expert level but that it could not be an "endless process" and needed to be concluded "very soon" Asked about the IAEA’s call for Iran to provide "timely and active cooperation" with the inspections mandated under the JCPOA Najafi said that Iran had interpreted this as encouragement to extend voluntary invitations to the agency to conduct inspections However he said that "while Iran is not benefiting from the deal no one should expect Iran to implement. voluntary measures" the minister said.
