Put Guyana 1st, focus on removal of this Govt

first_imgDear Editor,Some people seem to feel that running a Government is a sole proprietor business – a one-man business – but this is so far from the truth. It is a known fact that a Party goes into an election with a manifesto which sells the party to the electorate. If the party wins, then it is a team effort comprised of persons who should have the ability to deliver on those promises. In addition, there are many advisors who are strategically appointed to assist these persons. The presidential elect not only gives guidance but takes guidance. In Guyana, the coalition and the new kids on the block with their handful of supporters, some claiming to be disgruntled PPP members and supporters, are hammering away at the election of Mr Irfaan Ali as the PPP’s presidential candidate, making their repetitive rounds of personal attacks while claiming that he is “Jagdeo’s third term”.Bharrat Jagdeo has always been the focus of attack in and out of Office; his salary, his pension, his “mansion” as is claimed. Yet even the Prime Minister is now earning more than him and living the “Cadillac” lifestyle. This Government utilised great efforts and massive financial resources to ensure that he does not get a third term as President since they are mortally afraid of his sharp intellect and his topnotch statesmanship. The decision of the Caribbean Court of Justice did not deter or daunt his spirit. It must be recalled by Guyanese that after the PPP’s defeat by a one-seat majority he rose from the ashes like the proverbial Phoenix and began a political crusade that was unrelenting in exposing the corruption and thievery of the coalition. His weekly press conferences were just as eagerly looked forward to as “Days of Our Lives”!Eventually, he strategised and orchestrated the downfall of the APNU/AFC Government; something which hardly anyone had believed would have been possible. Jagdeo’s relentless pursuit bore fruit and gave hope to the hopeless in this country which had begun to fall into the abyss of social and economic degradation. But while he did the Herculean task, some were waiting like the hyenas to partake from the kill of the lion. A few of these were in the media headlines for all the wrong reasons! Now he is being vilified once again by those heartless opportunists who never even bat an eyelid for their country. But I know that it will never derail his focus of ensuring the good life for his people! As I recall, when Donald Ramotar became the presidential candidate twice for the PPP, there were no cries, wails and gnashing of teeth. He was not seen as the surrogate or puppet of Jagdeo. He was acceptable because they knew that they could outmanoeuvre him at any time. In fact, they dubbed him the “Lame Duck”! The then Opposition took full advantage of this and Nagamootoo tabled a no-confidence motion which saw his Government’s downfall. Ramotar was the “perfect” opponent and now the coalition wants another one. However, when one listened to the debates and presentations of Irfaan Ali, it is evident that he has what it takes to not only run this country but to destroy the corruption posse and thwart the efforts of the APNU/AFC to bring down his Government if needs be. He has that charisma, courage and competence and enough has been said about his achievements as a Minister. Let them call it what they want but Irfaan Ali is no Donald Ramotar and will never be an easy walkover! Finally, as a member of the PPP, I am in total agreement with the election of any presidential candidate since I have full confidence in the ability of my Party to choose the best candidate. The Central Committee has 35 potential candidates from which one must be chosen. When I was with the Alliance for Change I had no problem with either Trotman or Ramjattan being the presidential candidate. When I joined the PPP, I had no problem with Ramotar being the presidential candidate twice and today I have no problem with Irfaan Ali being the presidential candidate. Let us put Guyana first and focus on the removal of this Government. God Bless our presidential candidate and God Bless Guyana!Yours sincerely,Haseef YusufRDC CouncillorRegion Sixlast_img read more

Martial sends United 2nd, Liverpool held

first_imgJuan Mata added a third in the 68th minute and despite Pelle scoring again, United held on for a victory that propelled Louis van Gaal’s side up to second place in the Premier League table, two points below leaders Manchester City, who lost 2-1 at home to West Ham United on Saturday.Martial, who signed from Monaco on transfer deadline day for a reported initial fee of £36 million ($55 million, 49 million euros), started up front alongside Wayne Rooney, who returned following a hamstring injury.Southampton went ahead when Pelle followed in to score after Sadio Mane’s shot from James Ward-Prowse’s inviting right-wing cross had been parried by visiting goalkeeper David de Gea.Pelle hit the post moments later, but Martial equalised in the 34th minute, throwing Virgil van Dijk off balance with a neat Cruyff turn inside the box and slipping a shot beneath Maarten Stekelenburg. He put United ahead five minutes into the second half, seizing on a woeful Maya Yoshida back-pass and coolly beating Stekelenburg, before Mata slammed home after Memphis Depay’s shot came back off the post following a hypnotic 45-pass move. While Martial again stole the headlines, United were also indebted to De Gea, who produced a jaw-dropping one-handed save to claw a Jose Fonte header off the line when the score was 2-1.Pelle converted a cross from Mane with a well-placed header four minutes from time, but United survived.– Sturridge returns –United’s old rivals Liverpool continue to struggle, having seen their run of league games without victory extended to four following a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City.Daniel Sturridge made his first appearance since April after hip surgery and his side went ahead in the 48th minute when Danny Ings, a half-time replacement for Christian Benteke, drilled home his first Liverpool goal. But Norwich equalised 13 minutes later courtesy of a deft lob by centre-back Russell Martin — his third goal of the campaign. The result left Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool in 13th place, seven points below City, but a point above defending champions Chelsea, who beat Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday in a game that saw Gabriel and Santi Cazorla sent off for Arsene Wenger’s side.Earlier, Son Heung-min’s first Premier League goal earned Tottenham Hotspur victory over Crystal Palace. The South Korea international struck in the 68th minute at White Hart Lane, moments after Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had tipped a shot from Bakary Sako onto the post at the other end, to give the hosts a 1-0 win.Son has now scored three goals in two games, after his debut brace against Qarabag of Azerbaijan in the Europa League, and Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino hailed his impact following his move from Bayer Leverkusen.“When you sign players you expect them to make a big impact in the team. We are very happy with him,” said the Argentine.“He has adapted to the team very well. After scoring twice in the Europa League he scored again and when you arrive at the club as a striker, that’s very good.”It was Spurs’ first home win of the campaign and lifted Pochettino’s side to ninth place in the table, below Alan Pardew’s Palace on goals scored.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Manchester United’s striker Anthony Martial (L) shoots to score his second goal during an English Premier League football match against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium, southern England on September 20, 2015. Newcastle United 2-0 Brighton: Magpies move up to fourth with impressive win

first_img Jonjo Shelvey celebrates his sublime free-kick 1 Newcastle moved up to fourth in the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-0 victory that brought an end to Brighton’s six-month unbeaten run.The Seagulls had not lost in the league, excluding May’s play-offs, since February but could not prevent the Magpies from making it three wins in a row to help forget about starting the campaign with two defeats.Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles put Rafael Benitez’s side in front after quarter of an hour with a powerful header before Jonjo Shelvey added the crucial second in the 64th minute with a sublime free-kick.Brighton, whose manager Chris Hughton led Newcastle to promotion in 2010, could find no way back after that having been reduced to 10 men when Sam Baldock was sent off for a second caution in the 55th minute.Shelvey’s first goal for Newcastle since his £10million move from Swansea in January followed that dismissal and after that Brighton battled but to no avail. On a day when it was confirmed Newcastle are close to adding aerial strength to the squad by moving for Ipswich’s Daryl Murphy, it was ironic that it was a header which put them ahead. It was not from lone striker Ayoze Perez, asked to lead the line in the absence of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle, but the more unlikely source of centre-back Lascelles. The Newcastle skipper rose just inside the 18-yard box to power a brilliant header inside David Stockdale’s right-hand post after meeting the fine free-kick delivery of Matt Ritchie.Brighton, with eight points from four undefeated matches previously this season, looked hungry to impress but the noise levels had been lifted and Newcastle enjoyed the rest of the half.Yoan Gouffran almost scored a belter of a second nine minutes later. A move that started in the right-back position, where Vurnon Anita made a tackle, ended with a blistering 30-yard drive from Gouffran which crashed off the crossbar.Newcastle looked confident in possession but still had to be wary of a Brighton side showing glimpses of why they have been hard to beat for so long.Seconds before Baldock’s sending off, the Seagulls almost levelled. Anthony Knockaert, the subject of a failed bid from Newcastle earlier in the summer, cut inside and struck the bar from 12 yards. But Brighton’s task was made harder when Baldock, already cautioned for a foul on Perez, arrived late to wipe out goalkeeper Matz Sels after he cleared his lines and that was enough to earn him a second yellow.Nine minutes later it was two when Mohamed Diame was brought down by Steve Sidwell 25 yards from goal. Shlevey, back in the side under Benitez, curled a fine free-kick over the wall and inside Stockdale’s top-left corner.Shelvey almost had a second too, but his low strike destined for the bottom corner was turned behind for a corner as Brighton struggled to find a way through to make a game of it.last_img read more

Sewage conflict could end soon

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe joys and headaches of holiday travel: John PhillipsSettlement negotiations, which could lead to new compliance schedules, are in progress. “We believe the intense part of negotiations will occur in mid-October,” said Harold Singer, Lahonton’s executive director. “We should know very quickly whether there is a settlement or if we are hopelessly deadlocked.” Singer said he anticipates a settlement or some type of enforcement action in early next year. “We will fish or cut bait by the first quarter of ’07,” Singer said. Officials for Los Angeles County Sanitation District 14, which serves Lancaster, and District 20, which serves Palmdale, say they are progressing as fast as they can and that the delays have been from factors outside their control, including weather and unforeseen technical issues in design and construction. LANCASTER – A conflict might soon come to a head between state water regulators and sanitation district officials in Lancaster and Palmdale over whether enough progress is being made with orders to keep sewage off Air Force property and to clean up nitrates in groundwater. At issue are two cease-and-desist orders issued by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board – one to the district in Lancaster to keep sewage off Edwards Air Force Base land and another to the district serving Palmdale to clean up nitrates in groundwater. Lahontan officials are questioning the delays in complying with their orders, including two-year slips in major construction projects proposed to resolve the problems. Officials for the sanitation districts call the timetables set by the orders unreasonable and have challenged them in court. “These projects are very complex, very large, and growing in costs,” said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford, who sits on the board of both districts. “We will get our arms around this thing.” Ledford said he anticipates a settlement being reached and new schedules set. Lahontan hired a consultant to study whether the districts’ claims of difficulties in design and construction are valid. That report should be completed within a few weeks, Singer said. In 2004, Lahontan issued a cease-and-desist order to the Lancaster district to stop treated sewage from spilling into Rosamond Dry Lake at Edwards by fall 2008. At the same time, Lahontan issued a cease-and-desist order to the sanitation district serving Palmdale, directing that it stop nitrate discharges into groundwater by fall 2009. In response to the orders and to what officials saw as a pressing need to handle growth, both districts developed 20-year plans that called for constructing new “tertiary” treatment plants – whose output would be safe for human contact – and storage ponds. Schedules for the completion of both treatment plants, however, have been pushed back by two years, with Lancaster now slated to be online in 2010 and Palmdale in 2011. Both districts have made progress. In Lancaster, the district has completed the design for the treatment plant and a pipeline has been completed that will be used to carry treated water to agricultural fields. In Palmdale, the issue is groundwater quality – in particular, stopping nitrates, a pollutant that can cause a condition known as “blue baby” syndrome among infants. Nitrates have leaked into the underground water table from Sanitation District 20’s decades-old practice of spreading treated sewage on farming operations and barren land to soak into the ground. The land spreading has been stopped and the district has added more acreage of agriculture to which the treated effluent can be applied. The Palmdale district also has installed six extraction wells to pull out nitrate-contaminated groundwater. james.skeen@dailynews (661) 267-5743160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Alvaro Morata: ‘I’ve played 15 minutes and critics are already killing me’

first_img2 Alvaro Morata missed a penalty in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal Alvaro Morata will have been left disappointed by his competitive debut in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, but fears critics are already attempting to write him off at Chelsea. The Spain striker sealed a £60million move – a club-record fee for the Blues – from Real Madrid in July, with manager Antonio Conte selecting him as his big-money replacement to the exiled Diego Costa. He’s set to make his official debut this Saturday against Burnley at Stamford Bridge, and he says he’s prepared for ‘what’s ahead’ having experienced a taste of the intense spotlight he’s under in the Premier League.“I can admit that it is a very significant amount, but I have the character to be able to play calmly and to follow my path,” he told Marca when asked if his price tag could affect his form. “I have only played two pre-season matches, I’ve played 15 official minutes and I’ve missed a penalty [in the Community Shield shootout] and they’re already killing me, so I know what to expect.“That’s the price you must pay for such a big transfer. It’s also something that motivates me… I know that double the number of people are now watching me.” 2 It was Conte who pushed for the deal that saw Morata move to Juventus in the summer of 2014, and the 24-year-old has detailed how he feels he owes the Chelsea manager for believing in his ability. “I knew that Conte wanted me and I’d spoken with him several times. In a certain way, I feel like I owed him something because he was the one who signed me for Juventus, only for him to have to leave.“At the start I wasn’t aware that he had so much interest in signing me, but when I understood it then I had no doubts and [Chelsea] was my preference.”Morata, though, does have big boots to fill.Costa, who has been told he has no future with the south west London outfit, has scored 42 league goals in his three seasons in England’s top flight, and his successor is aiming for a career first in his debut campaign.“I hope to score more than 20 goals, as that’s my job. I also won’t become obsessed with it, as I’d trade that for titles for the team.“At Juventus, for example, I didn’t score more than 20 goals in any year and won all titles except the Champions League final. I want to score goals, but a player can also be remembered for other aspects of play.”last_img read more

Woman shot outside City Hall

first_imgPALMDALE – Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a middle-aged woman armed with two pistols in a pre-dawn confrontation Friday outside City Hall . When a half-dozen deputies summoned by maintenance workers’ 911 call ordered the woman to drop her weapons, she ran into a parking lot, then pointed the guns at the deputies, a sheriff’s official said. “They were shouting at her continuously as she was running through the place. Once she pointed the weapons at the deputies they were compelled to fire at that point,” sheriff’s Lt. Joe Hartshorne said. The woman, who was not immediately identified but who was described as white and about 40, was flown by helicopter to a hospital, where deputies said she was listed in serious condition. The workers who reported the armed woman were not harmed, she said. “Everybody’s OK,” LaFata said. District attorney’s and Office of Independent Review officials will be reviewing the shooting. Deputies strung yellow crime-scene tape around much of civic center’s Poncitlan Square, and around parking lots that border it, because the woman had been moving around the area and authorities didn’t know where evidence might have been left. The City Hall administration building was closed to the public until 1 p.m. because of the crime scene in front of it. The adjoining city development services building and a Social Security Administration courtroom were open, but visitors had to park outside the city hall parking lot and sign in with a deputy manning a table at the parking lot driveway. The woman was shot in the parking lot immediately in front of the administration building. Five markers indicating empty shell casings were visible behind a parked patrol car nearby. Hartshorne said detectives didn’t know yet how many deputies had fired, or if the woman had fired at them.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Gunfire broke the window in Mayor Jim Ledford’s office. “Good thing I wasn’t there,” the mayor said. “We live in a society where frightening things do happen.” Detectives do not know the woman’s motivation, Hartshorne said. “None of the deputies indicated they’d seen her before,” he said. Raphoe ladies lose narrowly at Ballymoney

first_imgOn Saturday Raphoe 1st XI ladies travelled to Ballymoney for their third fixture in Premier Hockey. Ballymoney 1 Raphoe 0The ladies knew they would have a tough challenge ahead, as Ballymoney have been playing top flight hockey for a significant number of years. They went out with a very positive mindset and knew that they would have to perform as a strong team. Some good end to end hockey from both teams resulted in Ballymoney being awarded a number of short corners in the first half which were well handled by the Raphoe defence.Raphoe were eager to take their chances when they arose and on one occasion were unlucky not to open the score line with a brilliant run on the counter attack from Katy Love and Leanne Patterson. On the brink of half time Raphoe were reduced to 10 players following a green card offence and the Raphoe short corner defence of Wendy Patterson, Lisa Patterson, Sabrina Barnett, Vicki Wray and Heather Humphrey were able to keep the score line at a stalemate with the half time whistle. The positive attitude from the Raphoe team continued into the second half with all the ladies working hard. The Raphoe girls utilised there hockey heads to their advantage by moving the ball swiftly from one side of the pitch to the other to infiltrate the home sides circle. The home side weren’t put off by this great play and continued to showcase some great hockey.Raphoe found themselves on the back foot as a short corner was awarded against them and unfortunately on this occasion Ballymoney managed to place the ball in the back of the net.Raphoe did not let this phase them however and continued to play good hockey through from the defence right up to the forward line. The Raphoe side got more and more attacking play in this half and were awarded 3 short corners throughout this half but were unlucky not to score. The midfielders and forwarders put their off pitch training into action through some tough running across the pitch to put the Ballymoney defence under immense pressure to get the ball up the pitch.Raphoe were unlucky not to equalise the scoring through Leanne Patterson who made a run into the opposition circle and made a shot on goal which was narrowly wide.Raphoe are home next week in a fixture against Ards where they are hoping to add to their points tally and celebrate that night at the annual presentation night in Kees Hotel.Raphoe ladies lose narrowly at Ballymoney was last modified: October 13th, 2019 by Chris McNultyShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:RaphoeRaphoe ladieslast_img read more
